apparently food inspections stopped bc of the shutdown so things bout to be real fucked up for some of us

“The Food and Drug Administration has stopped routine food safety inspections of seafood, fruits, vegetables and many other foods at high risk of contamination because of the federal government’s shutdown…”

Most companies are probably going to continue their regular food safety procedures, but a few things you can do to reduce some personal risk:

Buy hard, solid veggies and fruits (apples, melons) or ones with rinds (bananas are probably fine). Scrub the peel/rind thoroughly with soap and water before consumption.

The more solid and dense the meat, the less likely it is for contamination to spread very far. Buy your meat in solid cuts, NOT GROUND. Especially not ground chicken rn, salmonella bad.

Cook things thoroughly. Follow guidelines for the internal temperatures meat is supposed to reach and stick to those guidelines. Use a meat thermometer. Make your steaks well done for a while.

I’d stay away from shellfish as a whole if I were you. The diseases you can get from it are some of the nastier ones. No sushi for a while, too. If you have fish, make sure it was frozen following anti-parasitic guidelines and cook thoroughly.

AVOID LEAFY GREENS. This is where we’ve been seeing the most outbreaks lately, so be very careful.

The pregnant, elderly, immunocompromised, and the very young are the ones most at risk in an outbreak. If you are in one of these groups, be extremely cautious and avoid soft cheeses and prepackaged deli meats. Check on friends and family in these groups. Report symptoms of foodborne illness to a doctor so they can report to the state health depts that are still running.

Even with these in mind, remember that most outbreaks of foodborne illness are due to things like improper cooking and storage. Stay safe out there, folks 💙

Oh great, more good news.

After this year, all students in high school will have been born after the September 11th Attacks. It is only something in the history books to them.

why do we focus on 9/11 so much? why can’t we focus on current problems like school shootings and actually being taught shit we need to know in real life

Serious response ahead!

For people just a few years older than me, 9/11 changed everything. In one day, the whole world felt fundamentally different. If you listen to how people talk about 9/11 you understand that this is the day they point to when they started to realize the world was scary.

For those of us too young to remember 9/11, Sandy Hook or Parkland was that day where everything became darker. Where we had to sober up and look at the world.

We put the importance on school shootings because we grew up on December 14th, 2012 and Feburary 14th, 2018.

The people in charge right now grew up on September 11th, 2001. For them, nothing changed on those days, not really, not in the way it did for those of us who didn’t really understand a national tragedy, who had no words for that fear and sadness and anger. They all felt that before us.

Parkland didn’t hurt me as much because it cut a path through my heart that Sandy Hook had already carved. It was familiar pain and so I told myself it ached less. That I already knew the world was full of terror, that our country had failed our children and our government had paid in blood for the shallow comfort of a gun in the bedside table.

So, for the people in charge: 9/11 is still a part of every day. Every national tragedy is an echo of their fears and disappointments. They see school shootings as an extension of terrorism, an extension of safety measures that we failed to put in place. School shootings are framed by two towers for an older generation.

Bad UI design concept: a game that uses descriptive terms rather than numeric rankings for its graphics quality levels, and lists them in alphabetical order. Just make ‘em guess whether “Beautiful” better or worse than “Fantastic”.

I want to flood your home with Blackberry jam.

Set the default resolution based on the width of the Windows desktop, rather than the width of any individual display. Running dual HD monitors? The game launches in a 4K window.

(For bonus points, arrange the options screen so that the resolution selector falls in the lower half of the viewport, rendering it inaccessible if the window is taller than the screen.)

I’m going to come into your home and move everything a couple of centimeters to the left.

Separate volume controls for music, SFX and dialogue, but the combat chatter is on the SFX channel rather than the dialogue channel.

I shall reupholster all your furniture with coarsely spun burlap.

A minimap that rotates to match the direction your character is currently facing even though the overhead camera’s orientation is fixed dead north.
